Frequently Asked Questions
Who can play rugby?
The short answer is anyone can play rugby. Rugby is not just for large men. There is a spot for all sizes, speeds, and genders on the rugby pitch. Most rugby teams do not have names on their jerseys because the focus is on the team and not the player.
How old do players need to be?
Panthers Rugby Club is focused solely on Youth Rugby and we accept players as young as 6. Players must have enough maturity and attention-span to participate in 90+ minute practices and follow instructions of the coaches.
Is rugby dangerous?
Rugby is a contact sport, and as such carries an inherent risk of injury. Our coaching philosophy focuses on safety, proper technique, and gradual introduction to contact to minimize these risks.
What equipment is required?
One of the nice things about Rugby is how little equipment is required to play. All players doing contact (U12 and above) must wear a mouthguard (gumshield). We recommend a simple upper mouthguard, not the double-layer "football" style with a strap.
What about weather and clothing?
We practice in almost all weather. For colder evenings, we recommend tights/sweats under shorts and a long-sleeve athletic top under the jersey. A warm waterproof coat for the sidelines is very important. Gloves are generally discouraged as they interfere with ball handling.
Are cleats required?
Technically not required, but having a good pair of cleats can make all the difference. They give you traction on the field allowing you to contest for the ball and move effectively.
What if I just want to try it out?
If you just want to try out a practice or two and see if you like it, please just come out to the pitch for a practice or two. Fall is an excellent time to do this as we are purely in “training” mode and it’s a great time to meet everyone.
Note that we are happy to have you come out to the pitch to watch a practice at any time.
